I had one last ultrasound yesterday. The technician said the baby was doing great, everything was right on track, and went on and on about how good things looked. Then just as I'm getting ready to go, she says, "big head." Nooooo, don't say that. Those are so not the words a woman wants to hear a couple weeks away from delivery.
I'm trying to ignore what that comment means for delivery and have returned to the hat factory to make more hats for that big head. (Some of you asked about the sizes I've been making. I made two hats in a newborn size on an 11" circular needle, but all the rest have been in a 0-6 month size and knit on a 16" circular. They should be large enough for her big head.) To prepare for hat class tonight, I knit the white hat for the rosebud wreath up to the decreases.
Eeeek! Looking at all these knitted hats and finishing the last few I've still got on the needles is not helping me keep my mind off that big head.

Hey you gave birth to twins and you raised twins until now, a little big head shouldn't scare you :)
And beside that all ultrasounds are never 100% right. Heads up, everything wil be fine.
I had a big head when I was born...I think my mother has forgiven me. ;-) I can't wait to see your baby in all of the hats that you've made for her! I know that they will be adorable!
That ultrasound film came out great! Perfect profile :) Good luck with the delivery. I hope it's an easy one. I can't wait to see pics of the little one wearing all those hats you're making!!

Good luck with the delivery! Can't wait until the little one can model all those itty-bitty hats you've been working on!
Maybe she'll be tall then. Little medical fact from my med school days: A newborn's head is usually half her height plus 10 cm. Ahh.. the useless info I remember and yet I can never find my keys!!!
Wow, are you really only a couple of weeks away? That flew by!
Ditto what Sibylle said. The closer you get to delivery, the less accurate the ultrasound measurements are. I just can't see a tiny person like you having a big headed baby. She'll fit into those newborn hats just fine, you wait and see!
Think fontanels, molding, and newborns with cone heads. Breathe deep and relax.
i'm a new reader and just wanted to thank you for your great short-row tutorial. i successfully completed one heel and am working on the second on the techguy socks you designed.
best wishes on your current project :)
I have to assume that, in the heat of the moment, even an inch or two larger will not be noticeable. I mean, it's not like you wouldn't feel it if her head was small. :-) Besides, she's gonna need all those brains to keep up with her big brothers. Have you knitted her a teensy matching nose warmer yet?
Wendi, I'm not thaaat close - still officially a little over a month - but close enough to start really thinking about it!
dang...she does have a big head...and she looks just like to boys..i cannot wait to meet this wee one. xoxo
wow a few weeks away huh? That went fast!
Congrats :)
I had a big headed baby but had a c-section because of his shoulders. He went right into size 1 diapers.
Can't wait to meet her! Have fun at class!
My doctor kept telling me my second baby would be a giant. I didn't even buy newborn diapers. Her brother had been 8.25 pounds, and she was 8.5, so they got me all in a flap for nothing. And I won't say she just flew out, but certainly the second birth was way easier than the first!
Shame on that tech. What a thing to say!
The hats are so dang cute, though. At least she'll be able to display them prominently! :)
Hey its not so the size of the head floating around in there......its the way it 'moulds' as you give birth that counts......2nd births are usually sooooo much easier...your body has 'done this before''''' just think of the number of 9 pounders predicted who turn out to be 7.......still a bit of an inexact science!!!!
Ultrasounds aren't exact & what your body can do is amazing. I'd like to see a pic of all the hats together & then I think you need to get knitting larger sizes, so she can stay the fashion queen even when you're too busy to knit.
A couple of weeks?! I thought you had until March.
Anyway, it's not the head you have to worry about, it's the shoulders.
I guess you didn't want to hear that either. ;)
You'll do GREAT, just keep your eyes on the ultimate prize.
you should have told him to zoom out a little ;-)
dont worry.
btw, how did the boys arrive?
Dude! That's not a good thing to say! The ultrasounds can be off though, and big head or not this little girl will be out in a jiffy! Really though, what were they thinking saying something like that?
My son had a "big head" at birth and newborn hats still fit him. I agree the tech should never have told you that (from a woman near deliverys perspective) however, from a knitter's prospective it's good to know you'll need to knit some bigger hats. LOL
Don't worry! You and your little girly will do just fine. :)
Don't stress about the big head comment. We were told that my son had a big head during an ultrasound, and we had to go get another specialized ultrasound to check it out. In the end, he was absolutely fine, and his head size was only 50% at birth!
I would have knocked that tech right upside her BIG HEAD. They know better than that!
I had a big headed baby. So big that I had to put the cute hats that came with outfits onto her MONTHS before the outfit would fit her. Despite that, she popped out fine.
I feel for ya. Both my kids had HUGE heads. And the younger one was nearly 10 lbs when was born (two weeks early). The best advice I have to pass onto my daughters is to marry a man with a small head. But don't worry, it will all work out. Just focus on the hats and don't think about the head!
I gave birth to all my babies (5) with a midwife and most at home too so I have no idea how a regular Doctor does it so I don't know if you know about prenatal perineal messages. ( Here's an article: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/pregnancy_childbirth/43415 ) I think it really works great, even though it's embrasing to talk about I had to tell you encase it could help you. The first time I needed stitches but all the four others babies I had nothing happen. Good luck...and most of all have faith in yourself.
Oh...and don't you think the wee one needs socks?
Wendy, I was planning on making a whole bunch of booties, since I like having babies wear handknit booties over store-bought socks. But then I got caught up in the hats. Luckily, my knitting buddies threw me a shower and made almost two dozen pairs of booties for wee one.! So her feet are all set!
And I wasn't mad at the technician (actually, I think it was the doctor) or anything. I was glad to hear that the baby is a good healthy size. She was very nice about the big head thing and certainly didn't say it in a mean or joking way - really just a comment on the baby's good size. It's one of those things that you're happy to hear, but then you start thinking what that means.
When my mom had me (fat head), the doctor told her she had "stretched the hole", and could have a bigger one next time. When my brother was born (fatter head), the doctor said "I was just kidding!"
When my friend's wife gave birth to her first, he was 9 lbs 10 oz. 3 pushes and no problems, he really did just pop out. It is possible ;-)
I would not worry. My daughter was 9lb 2oz, and she just popped out. Compared to my first one she was a breeze to have. My son was 7pd and he just did not want to come out, but he had a little round head. I will cross my fingers for you and hope that everything goes well. Just remember that everything is stretched the second time round too so that should help you. If it is more than 10 years since each pregnancy then it is like having the first one all over again so I've been told.
I too gave birth to a big headed boy. He popped out after only 30 min of pushing. (Not too bad for a first time mommy.) You'll do great!
I had the same 'big head' comment when I had a scan at 37 weeks. They were right, as he turned out to be 10lbs! It wasn't a walk in the park, but it all turned out fine in the end and I was pleased to go in with a bit of an idea of what to expect. I'm sure it will all go well for you and your litle one.
I wouldn't worry too much, you've had twins and what someone said about ultrasounds not being 100% accurate is sooo true. They thought my second little guy would be about 7 to 8lbs. he was 9lbs.10oz.-maybe that's not what you wanna here. No, seriously every single one of my kids births was different. Just enjoy these last few weeks, finish up those beautiful itty bitty hats with a flourish!
OK- let me add to the 'big head' stories ;-)
When my children see a doctor who's not familiar with them, the doc always gets this 'I'm not going to look worried because I'm worried there's something seriously wrong' look, whip out the tape measure to measure the head and turn to the kids' charts to see just how much their heads have swollen.
Then they see in big black marker:
HUSBAND'S FAMILY HAS BIG HEADS
Wow Alison, she looks just like your boys :)
Could you do me a favor and remove my name from your 'cover your head' and 'winter gifts' knitalong blogs? I'm trying to update my blogger but my name is still associated with those, making it impossible. Thanks!
Don't worry about the size of her head (at least as far as the birth goes) - her skull bones will slide past each other and mold into a nice cone shape for easy birth. Now, if her head's too big for all those sweet little hats you've been knitting... that would be a problem.
It seems like it wasn't all that long ago that you announced your pregnancy, I can't believe it's almost time for her to come out and meet you all! I hope the last weeks of your pregnancy go smoothly and you have a beautiful labor and birth!
You inspired me to knit hats for the two February babies that friends are having. I was worried that this one was too big, but found out today that the baby (due Feb. 1) was born yesterday and was almost 9 and a half pounds! So I'm guessing this hat won't be too big....
Hard not to think about it, but try not to worry. Ease of delivery has much more to do with the position of the head than the size. Tell wee one to keep her head in a nice neat tuck, no leaning or looking sideways. I don't know where you are going to deliver, but if you come to BWH, come to CWN-10. I'll be happy to be your nurse. In a good way, not in a weird, stalker-y way. Good luck.
Eh -- everyone I know who has given birth in the past couple of years was given a pretty inaccurate estimate of the baby's size. And even if she does end up having a generously sized cranium, it's sure to be because she's a brainy baby.
Big heads luckily compact a *lot* during labor, so no worries. And I agree with Sarah - if she does have a sportin noggin, that just means she's extra smart. And you can call her "Head!" ;-)
Hey, big head might be okay as long as she has small shoulders. Those seemed to be the hardest part for me. I can't wait to meet her!
Just what you need to hear! When I had Maya, the sweetest words I remember hearing were "there are her eyebrows!" I knew the biggest part of the head was out. So have someone look for the eyebrows and you'll know it's all good from then on..... Thea
BIG HEAD????
yes, Larissa said it right--hope for small shoulders.
you are in my thoughts.
and also, the itty bitty hats are so cute and sweet, my teeth hurt!!!
:o)
My older boy's head was in the 99th percentile for size, the younger in the 95th. More room for brains that way!
Oh goodness! Her head looks the same size as every other ultrasound pic I have seen - but hey my cousin had the HUGEST head ever. His poor Mom - but he is 19 now and so, so smart. So maybe there is something to be said for big headed babies. I am sure there is something else to be said by the women who deliver such babies!
I love the sonogram photos...congratulations Alison...can't wait to see her big head with a tiny cute hat on it :)
I couldn't stand it anymore!!!
Bought ITTY-BITTY-HATS.
What a book!
What on earth is wrong with that ultrasound tech? What possible good could come from her saying that? NONE. All it can do is make you nervous & undermine your confidence in your ability to deliver baby girl naturally. Shame on her - ignore what she said. They can't always tell size that accurately anyway.
Her head may look enormous, but don't forget the great book you've been knitting out of...ITTY-BITTY HATS. Emphasis on the itty-bitty part. Bigger than her fingers and toes, but still pretty darn itty-bitty.... Keep repeating... :-)
Love, love, love the Rosebud Wreath!!
