i'm a lean mean itty bitty hat making machine

I cannot stop making these Itty-Bitty Hats for wee one! Just a couple of pages away from the rosebud hat is this adorable "upside down daisy" hat.

I'm teaching my beginner's hat class again, and as I needed something simple to cast on, I started the daisy hat. No idea why I had a ball of pink Berroco Touche in my stash, but it was perfect for the hat. I really liked the feel of the cotton/rayon yarn while knitting with it and love the look of the finished fabric. I cast on in class and suddenly, the whole thing was done. It still needs its flower petals of course, but the hat part is done.

I think the actual hat part of the rosebud hat follows the exact same pattern as this hat, so it'll be a breeze to make that with my students next week. Then I can add all the flowers to both of them.

Is it even going to be possible for her to wear this many hats? I'm stuck in "knitting for twins" mode, aren't I?

how cute those little hats are.

Yes, it is possible for her to wear that many hats. One a day and then rotate! :)

I love the hats. I am getting that book as soon as I get a chance. It's adorable! :)

After you've had your gorgeous little hat-recipient, you can select a few of the hats to donate to your hospital or birth center, to grace the heads of the little munchkins who aren't fortunate enough to have mommies who knit.

Making any just a little larger? It would be horrible for her to grow out of all of them at the same time. But don't stop now.

Posted by: Sarah at January 18, 2007 10:16 AM

Well, she may have to wear a number of hats each day to exhaust her wardrobe, but I would imagine that won't be too difficult. They are all so cute!!! And to Carrie's point -- this way they won't be worn out when they do get passed along.

Too many hats is a good problem to have -- especially when they are all as adorable as these!

Posted by: Sarah at January 18, 2007 10:54 AM

i just finished the hat on the plane home from nashville last night...it is super cute. i'll show you before i have to give it away on sunday at a baby shower...i modified the petal pattern slightly as follows:
-i repeated rows 3 and 4 FOUR TIMES, instead of two. they just seemed to need to be a little longer
-row 9: i just did a ssk (not TBL)
-row 10: i did it all in Purl, not knit, as the pattern is written. it might be a mistake? so, ssp, k1 and p2tog

make sense?

Too many hats is like too many shoes or purses -- not possible. But I agree that a few bigger ones might not be a bad idea, so she'll have some for future winters. And remember that she'll probably be significantly bigger than the boys were when they were born. All that extra mommy real-estate to spread out in....

I knit the tart hat from knitty for my little guy and couldn't wait for him to wear it. I also made another garter stitch hat with matching sweater and long before even having a baby I knit a bunny hat. Then he was born in the Summer...with a full head of thick curly hair. I had to give away his hats. :)

This one is my favorite so far.
Way too cute!

Posted by: michelle at January 18, 2007 11:56 AM

That is the best hat yet! I think I might have to find a copy of that book.

Posted by: Kristin at January 18, 2007 12:03 PM

You'll be the only person in boston hoping for a REALLLLLLY long winter this year. The hats are supercute.

Posted by: shireen at January 18, 2007 12:10 PM

That is such an adorable hat! And hats are like scarves, you can never have too many. She can have a hat for every outfit!

Posted by: C at January 18, 2007 12:20 PM

That hat is adorable! I'm re-living my baby hat knitting for my little girls. No, it is not possible for her to have too many!

Posted by: Emily at January 18, 2007 12:20 PM

I love all these hats! If you are at all like me you will be thankful to have a lot of hats with your little one. My little boy is always taking his off in the car, or one gets left at Grandma's... it's kind of like chapstick or umbrellas. :)

Posted by: Alicia at January 18, 2007 12:50 PM

She'll be the best-hatted baby around!

There are so many adorable girly things out there that it's easy to go overboard. But I think she'll do fine with all of them. :)

Posted by: Lara at January 18, 2007 1:06 PM

think of it this way. what you don't use, you can donate to a local hospital. and they make great gifts, lol

Posted by: minnie at January 18, 2007 1:35 PM

she can have a hat for each room, one each for when the car drives south, north, east or west, one for sitting next to B, one for sitting next to S, well, you get the point. Of course, one for the trip to IKEA for something to store them all goes without saying...

Love those Itty Bitty hats. The Touche is so nice & soft. Berocco has a couple of free patterns for knitted toys made from Touche on their web site. I started the kitten for my granddaughter but Xmas knitting interrupted it [even tho it should only take a few hours - I couldn't find my bamboo DPN's so I started it on some old Boye DPN's which made me crazy slipping out of the soft Touche - so I had to keep picking up dropped stitches]. I'm going to finish it at my daughter's house next week.

They'll be happy to take some:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that book and have made 7 hats from it for the BBHP - I especially love the variations in the 3 main patterns for different yarn types.

i'm losing all of my resistance to buying this book and churning out hats... and i have no cute babies to knit for! i might need to get the book and start a lot of charitable knitting!

Posted by: kim at January 18, 2007 4:16 PM

The hats are very very cute!! You can always try and pick some favourites and give the rest away as gifts and, if your class really gets into it, a lot of hospitals need hats for unwell newborns. Maybe you could even modify the pattern for premature babies in ICU! I am sure you will have too much other baby knitting to do though!!!

Posted by: Rebecca at January 18, 2007 4:59 PM

I was thinking along the same lines as your ending comment... that you are going to need to be careful to switch hats or they will not all get worn! But they are all great! And heaven forbid I even mention... but she better not be one of the hat hating children! *lol*

How cute. I just hopped on over to Amazon.com and bought it. You've been the perfect enabler (and you didn't even know it). I hope purchase this doesn't violate the rules of Knit-from-your-stash 2007, but I think I'm safe. Thanks for sharing your wonderful work.

This hat is adorable! I can't get over how cute all the baby hats!

Posted by: silverarrowknits at January 18, 2007 7:31 PM

I love that little hat! I want to get that book.

Posted by: Michelle at January 18, 2007 10:06 PM

you sure are, LOL. and I still can't get over at how you accomplished that without getting ADD...I simply adored those cute baby sweaters you made the boys with the Giraff...
as for has I LOVE IT. I'm going to have to make it.
See, Gil has made a friend in day care, his friend mummy is due in one month time with a baby girl...so maybe I can make her that cute upsdie down hat, I have enough calmer in my stash left from the last hat I made.

I was reminded of your hat class yesterday. It's finally gotten cold around here, and so I had to pull out a hat. As I rushed out the door to get to work, I grabbed one of the first hats I ever made. It is awful. It is way too big, and it has some ridiculous 6" of ribbing for the brim. (Do not ask why. I do not know.) After I finished it, I said, "I need a different hat! NOW!" and I stumbled upon your a.b.c. pattern, which eventually led me to your blog. That hat is WONDERFUL! I made it in the same yarn as the Awful Hat so it would match mittens I had made to go with the hat. It kept my head warm, and it fit, and it was great.

The reason I did not grab this lovely hat yesterday, though, was that I gave away the hat. A few months ago I was helping distribute winter coats and gloves and hats to homeless people. It was probably the coldest day of the year and the wind was bitter. Most of the items we had brought got snatched up quite quickly. At the end of our time with the homeless group, I made one last effort to give away warm things to people, and as I got to the end of the line of the cold men and women who would be going back to their homes under bridges while I went over for calzones at my friend's house...I made the painful decision to give away the wonderful a.b.c. hat. "I have another one at home!" I insisted to the lady as I popped the hat off my head and pushed it into her hands.

So...your pattern is now being sported by one of Pittsburgh's sweetest ladies! I doubt few appreciate it more than she. Thanks so much for the pattern!!

Posted by: ruth at January 19, 2007 7:05 AM

Aww, it's so sweet! Don't worry. What with hats left in the car, under the bench, in the chair cushion, you'll have need of plenty of hats. Unless you don't live like I do. But let's assume you do. It's a very cute hat pattern.

I got this book for Christmas and I also have been knitting my way through it!! I just finished the bunny (modified to a bear for my 8 month old boy)!! I am going to try the turtle next!! It's really a fun book and a great way to learn different skills!! Not to mention all the beautiful hats out little ones get to wear.

Posted by: Jodi Bertsch at January 19, 2007 9:03 AM

I think if she wears 3 hats a day, you should be able to fit all of them into the rotation.

Posted by: Tracey at January 19, 2007 10:43 AM

If all the photographs are like that one I can understand why you are on this hat making bender. I just feel like eating that sweet, little baby neck. Oh, and the hat is adorable as well. See the effects it has?

Posted by: Sonya at January 19, 2007 10:47 AM

Little girls cannot have too many hats! My daughter wore a hat everyday for the first two years of her life. Gotta teach them young about the power to accessories!

Posted by: Allyson at January 19, 2007 1:38 PM

Hi again,
That upside down daisy hat has been the most popular hat in the book! There is an error on row 10 for the petals. It should be ssp, p1, p2tog. There aren't many corrections but the errata page is linked from my blog if anyone wants to check it out. The second printing is now underway and hopefully we caught all of the tiny bugs! You are making me so happy with your joyous hat knitting, I can't even tell you. You make me wish I was having another baby.
best, susan

you are killing me with those little hats!!! ^_^

That hat is going to be SOOOO cute!

I finally finished the weasley you inspired me to start ages ago... picture in my blog.

Posted by: Helene at January 22, 2007 5:28 AM

I don't think I have ever bought a book so fast in my life, one look at your blog then 3 clicks on Amazon. I've got 3 babies on the way, I've got to get cracking!
