blue boxes for b

Now this strip of B's blankie, I really like! The blue Cascade 220 Superwash is totally cool and the pattern of simple squares is very neat and crisp looking.

The stitch pattern, like the rib and seed pattern of the yellow strip, is from a pillow design in Sarah Dallas Knitting. It's enjoyable to knit, with each row of squares being a little goal for me to work towards each time I pick up the needles. Since baby L sleeps at night and screams during the day (which, I have to say, is vastly preferable to the alternative!), that means I don't get to pick up the needles that often. But still, I'm making progress, one row at a time. And B and I are both getting excited for this to be done!

it's looking beautiful, alison! what a gorgeous blue. he's one luck little guy (even if he does have to wait a little longer). we missed you yesterday - everyone asked after you and baby L. hope to see you both again soon! ~gabriella

i always hated it when babies got their days and nights mixed up. it happend the worst with my older son (he's 14 1/2 now). we didn't get him straightened out for a MONTH. of course, now he's a night owl, and we struggle with getting him to bed on time on a weekly basis, lol.

Hang in there Alison. I found with my kids that no amount of coaxing or reading baby books about sleep patterns persuaded them to do anything until they were good and ready to do it! The blue blankie is looking fab though.

You really amaze me, the amount you knit, even with a new little one in tow. I absolutely love this pattern, especially for a blankie! (The color reminds me of Linus, my favorite peanut. :) Are the squares seed stitch or garter?

Hang in there Beth, tiny babies are so hard to get "asimilated" to life outside the womb, she will come around. Get yourself plenty of rest.

Hey Alison, This blanket looks great!

You are just a blanket-cranking-outer.. or something!

Sorry to hear L is a noisy one. Hopefully she'll acclimate to being out of the womb soon!

That's a gorgeous color! Sorry about the screaming, even if it's at the best time possible. Hoping for calm for her and for you very soon.

Jeeze! You are a super woman! I had my baby 7 weeks ago and I have yet to find a minute to pick up the needles, and now that I am back at work I feel like I'll never have time to knit again! L is brand new and you're picking up right where you left off! Wow.

That looks really nice! I really need to get that book.

Seems like you're making progess pretty quickly! I like those square stitch patterns using knit and purl. They look nice and crisp, and the blanket is just the right way to showcase them.

Hi Alison -

Have you tried swaddling the baby or slinging her? I found that is a wonderful way to calm the baby.

I also recommend the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" to everyone. Lots of great tips and education. There's also a DVD sold under the same name, and is worth its' weight in GOLD. Helps a lot with crying.

Good luck!

Love the square pattern in the blanket.

I like the way this blankie is coming along. That is such a neat pattern you have chosen.

The blanket is so pretty. I am amazed that you are accomplishing so much with a newborn...but then, I find my knitting is the greatest stress relief/relaxer I can find. I am in the midst of a blanket for some brand new twins born to my daughte'rs best friend. I have one blanket done, the other lies there taunting me...

That's a gorgeous blue! Love the pattern. Your kids are so lucky!

Ali, when there's only 24 hours to deadline, we are already 30!!!

Posted by: Pilar at March 19, 2007 2:40 PM

I love the stitch patters from the Sarah Dallas book. I think I'm going to need to make an investment!

Keep up the good work... on both the knitting and the mommy-ing!!

It looks wonderful. While I certainly agree that screaming in the day and sleeping at night is much better than the opposite I do hope that she settles during the day soon for you.

Awww, new blankies for the fam! It looks great! I hope you get some knitting while nursing time in. I made lots of socks this fall when Beatrix was feasting!

Posted by: Elinor at March 19, 2007 4:54 PM

Ooh... I love that, but then again I love anything blue.

Posted by: Allie at March 19, 2007 5:58 PM

I like the blue your using for the blanket-i am surprised u use extra time to knit and not sleep or just lay and not move haha :) was wondering how you would rate the softness of the 220 superwash. And i do Hope little one calms a little for you :)

Love the blue section of the blanket. As for knitting, ANY amount you can do with a newborn is an achievement! For your little one, try laying her on her tummy over your knees -- you can knit with a baby in that position! I think my little guy spent his first 7 months that way (:

Bean just wanted to eat every hour and a half. As long as I could keep up with that, she was totally happy ;>

Good luck!

Congratulations on your new little one. She's just lovely.

Posted by: kate at March 19, 2007 11:20 PM

My first baby was the same. She cried for about 5 months. The only thing that worked was to wear her, like in a sling, or a Baby Bjorn, or (later) a backpack. She was only happy on me.

Luckily, with the carriers, my hands were free to knit and I spent most of my time pacing around my house, or doing the 'baby dance' from foot to foot (she screamed if I sat down), stitching. Sometimes the knitting got heavy and I had to tuck the work in behind her, just leaving the needles and a few rows free.

At the distance of 5 years, it seems sweet. At the time, it was hell on earth and I'm not sure I wouldn't have sold her to passing gypsies if they had offered.

I'm amazed that you are getting any knitting done at all. Adjusting from 2 to 3 was a big change in daily life. Have you tried a front pack baby carrier for during the day? They so like to be held and hear you heartbeat. Sounds like you are staying positive. I hope you are able to nap a little and get some rest. Are the boys enjoying her? Does she have daddy wrapped around her little finger yet?

Oh boy that is gorgeous. I'd say it's pretty darn good what Baby L is doing, considering her tender age. As it happens Gil was more or less that way also...quite a good night sleeper, when he was baby L's age he would wake up at 2am and 5am and go to sleep at 11am...I still say that it was the hospital that got him used to those hours. I had to say in for 6 days b/c of my c-section and he stayed 7 days b/c of jaundice BUT the NURSES would always wake all the moms up for a 05:00 am feeding when my kid was always sound asleep...but I still had to wake him for a feeding...when I was home w/ him he screamed during afternoon more...b/c of gas.

I love that! What a cool pattern that is. Your squares are so very neat too.
The blankie is going to be amazing.
I am glad your Wee one is sleeping at night!
