see funny sally

Introducing Sally, wee one's birthday babe (from Knitted Babes).

I named her Sally because it was the first name that popped into my head after I realized that "dolly" and "baby" were already taken by wee one's other dolls. Plus, the doll's floppy arms and legs instantly reminded me of the cover picture of the Silly Sally book. I also have this Dick & Jane fabric and the little girl Sally makes me think of wee one playing with her older siblings (well, if she would grow some hair!).

I put blond hair on the babe since I'm guessing wee one's hair will be blond (I also gave her some bright blue eyes like wee one's). The hair is actually Aurora 8 yarn left over from the braids on wee one's viking hat. I guess I've started just thinking of that as her hair now!

I LOVE how the stitches to hold the eyes on look like eyelashes!

Clearly though, I'm no hair stylist. The instructions in the book for the hair were also extremely vague. But that's okay cause I'm imagining wee one will just drag her around by the hair anyway.

And this book is really about all the doll clothes! Sally's first dress is a striped sun dress, which I knit in some cotton glace left over from my crinkle shrug. It took forever to knit! Well, the doll was pretty quick, so I suppose it only took forever in a relative sense. But it's a lot of garter stitch and all in a fingering/sport weight yarn, so the next couple of dresses will be sewn. A psychedelic a-line dress is already cut out and ready to go.

look at that cutie patootie pattern piece!

Oh, I'm having way too much fun with this!

That is just toooooooo cute!

I am going to have to pick up this book for my little one! I think she'll love the little dolls... what a great idea!

I like the idea of sewn dresses on the knitted doll - a great textural combination!

This is uncanny -- not only was I working on a babe for my own daughter at the same time you were, but I finished mine (and her accessories) just last night. I left her out near the breakfast table -- all "dolled" up so my daughter would see her first thing this morning. Then lo and behold -- it's the subject of your blog post today. Anyway, the hair instructions in the book were terrible! My babe has bangs because I had to use some extra yarn to get the hair to stay. (Fortunately, my daughter has bangs too.) I made the same dress you did, plus the bathing suit, a hat (I added a knit flower to that, which is really cute) and the mule shoes. I, too, may practice my sewing skills on the rest of her wardrobe because I'm ready to move on from the size one needles!!! (My babe should be up in my Ravelry projects sometime this weekend -- I'm LGordon555.)

Makes me wish I had a wee one to knit and sew for. Everything is just SO cute.

I love that you're having as much fun with the doll as L!

That is so cute. I never was very interested in dolls as a child but find them much more interesting now. Could this be my second childhood?

Posted by: Donna at February 29, 2008 11:31 AM

Me too, Donna. I'm surprised and my enthusiasm for this little doll and all her clothes. I wasn't into Barbie really as a kid. But then again, she's way cooler than Barbie! :)

That is so cool, Leslie. I can't wait to see yours!

I think Sally is very cute and I love the fabric used for the mod dress. Do you happen to know what it is?

Posted by: Chris G. at February 29, 2008 11:52 AM

She is a darling Dolly, and I'm sure Wee One will have many happy hours of play with her!

Don't be worried about Wee One's hair. Our oldest daughter didn't grow hair until she was two years old. I think that is common with natural blonds. Our daughter now has thick blond hair, and I thought she was going to be bald all her life!

Sally is adorable and the knitted babes are addictive! I love the psychedelic fabric that you're making the psychedelic sundress out of.

Posted by: Amy at February 29, 2008 12:12 PM

Chris, the fabric I'm using for the psychedelic dress was a fat quarter that I got at my lqs. Unfortunately, my piece didn't have the selvedge so I don't know anything about it. I'm going there again soon though and I'll check for more info.

Oh she looks great! I have the book but haven't started on my daughter's "babe" yet. Any hints on how you attached the hair to the top of the head. How does it look up there?

Posted by: susan at February 29, 2008 12:58 PM

Ooh, I love this! This is such a fun and fabulous idea. Do you think that someone would look at me funny if I had one of these? I don't have any kids, yet... ;)

What about matches dresses for Wee One and Sally, maybe even Mom, too?

Posted by: Anita at February 29, 2008 2:23 PM

The psychedelic outfit makes me think of Janice from the Muppets! Easily one of my favorites!

Very cute! I wore a dress very like Sally's new psychedelic togs to a sort of anti-prom party back in the 10th grade. I have to take issue with the Dick & Jane grammar, though. "See funny, Sally."??? If it were my fabric I'd be embroidering little red deletion marks over those misplaced commas. What are we teaching our youth? ;)

Posted by: Sarah at February 29, 2008 6:54 PM

I got it Sarah, I can applique over the erroneous comma! :D

Posted by: ALISON at February 29, 2008 7:06 PM

Your little doll is so cute! No doubt Wee One will love it. :) I actually have the same Dick & Jane panels but I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with them just yet...any ideas?

P.S. I just made an Emli Bonnet. Come check it out on my blog. It's adorable!

I am so happy for you with this project! I only had one child, a boy, so I never got to 'play dolls' or make fun little girly things.

The doll is awesome!

Posted by: Jenny at March 1, 2008 9:30 AM

That doll is so cute!!! And the psychedelic A-line dress fabric reminds me a little bit of Nick Verros' Barbie dress from Project Runway.

Posted by: Chrissy at March 1, 2008 10:42 AM

How Emilio Pucci - very 70's.

Posted by: Gayle at March 1, 2008 2:21 PM

Oooh yes, Chrissy, I remember that dress! Very fun!

Posted by: ALISON at March 1, 2008 2:38 PM

that is so many kinds of awesome! I left a comment in ravelry too, but I wanted to make sure and say how cute and well done your dolly is, good job!

I'd love to see an action shot!!

What a great doll. Loved the trip down memory lane with Dick and Jane. Too cute.

Posted by: Jennifer at March 1, 2008 5:33 PM

My wee one, who is now 8, had no hair for ever. Even my son had more hair than her. It will come... Now if only I could get her to comb it, we'll be fine.

Posted by: Mary de B at March 2, 2008 2:18 PM

Chris, I found the info on the fabric. It's from RJR Fabrics and the collection is called "So You Sew Fun". This one isn't being made any more and looks pretty hard to find, but I have seen some on eBay and in some fabric stores (it's in a half yard bundle at this online store). Good luck searching!
